Ananda College Wins the 54th William Gopallawa Shield

Ananda College is thrilled to announce its victory in the 54th William Gopallawa Shield Rugby Encounter, held on 16th August 2025 at the Ananda College Rugby Grounds, Rajagiriya. In a contest of strength, spirit, and strategy, our team showcased exceptional skill and determination to defeat Vidyartha College, Kandy, in a nail-biting finish with a final score of 22 – 21.

The William Gopallawa Shield, inaugurated in 1968, is an esteemed annual rugby fixture between Ananda College and Vidyartha College. Named in honor of Sri Lanka’s first Executive President, William Gopallawa, this historic encounter has for decades celebrated the true spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and competitive excellence between the two leading boys’ schools.

This year’s clash lived up to its reputation, as both teams fought fiercely until the very last minute, with Ananda College edging past Vidyartha College by a single point to secure the Shield. The thrilling victory is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our players, the dedication of our coaches, and the constant support of our school community. The encounter was further elevated by the presence of distinguished chief guests, esteemed old Anandians, and well-wishers who inspired the athletes with their encouragement.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Mr. D. M. L. P. Dissanayake of Ananda College, whose steadfast leadership and encouragement have been pivotal in nurturing our sporting talents. We also warmly acknowledge Principal Lt. Col. M. R. P. Mayadunne of Vidyartha College, Kandy, whose presence and leadership continue to uphold the spirit of this longstanding rivalry and strengthen the sporting bond between the two schools. Our sincere appreciation also goes to the Old Anandians Sports Club and the Old Anandians Rugby Wing for their invaluable support in organizing and uplifting this prestigious encounter.
